How to install a Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt?

Before starting, collect the essential instrument that you need to install your lock. Then start the procedure:

Step 1: Prepare your door

The first step is to prepare your door. To do it, remove any existing mounting hardware and deadbolt. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew the screws that hold the lock in place. 

Then clean the deadbolt area to get a perfect place for installation.

Step 2: Check the door measurement

Check if the lock hole, backseat, door thickness, and door edge hole are the proper sizes.

Step 3: Install the latch and strike plate

Place your deadbolt cylinder into the mounting hole of the door and confirm the latch bolt is aligned with this latch. Now secure it with the supplied screws.

Step 5: Install the exterior assembly

Now install the exterior assembly and ensure it is aligned with the mounting holes. Ensure the cable is connected correctly. 

Now secure it with the provided screws in the installation Kit.

Step 6: Install the interior assembly

Install the internal assembly on the inside part of the door onto the mounting hole and secure it with the provided screws.

Step 7: Install the batteries and perform door handing process

Now install the batteries into the lock and execute the door-handing process. It will guide your Lock the Door’s orientation.

Step 8: Test the deadbolt

Once you have completed the installation, Test the deadbolt by entering the default access code. Try with the code to lock and unlock the door to ensure the latch is properly engaged.

It is obviously the basic installation steps. Depending on the model, the process may be slightly different. 

Kwikset obsidian, Kwikset 905, 909, 913, 915, 916, 917, 919 premis, 955, 260, 264, 270, 275 are Electronic SmartCode Deadbolt.

Before going to the installation process, arrange some essential tools and materials you need to install the lock.

Depending on the model and application, you may need the below instrument:

• Phillips head screwdriver
• Piller,
• Hammar
• Wood block
• Tape measure 
• Allen wrench 
• Drill machine, etc.

How to install the Kwikset Electronic Smart Deadbolt?

To get the perfect result and successfully complete the installation of your lock, follow the below steps:

Step 1: Prepare the door

The first step is to prepare your door. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove any existing mounting hardware and deadbolt or lever.

Step 2: Check the door measurement

Check if the lock hole, backseat, door thickness, and door edge hole are the right sizes. 

Step 3: Install the latch and strike plate

Insert the latch in the center of the door hole and the strike plate on the door frame. 

Then secure it with the screws supplied in the installation kit.

Step 4: Install the deadbolt cylinder

Install a deadbolt cylinder(if your lock has a cylinder) into your lock housing and secure it.

Step 5: Install the exterior assembly

Install the exterior assembly and ensure it is aligned with the mounting holes. Then secure it. Ensure the cable is connected correctly. 

Step 6: Install the spindle

If you have a spindle with your lock in this step, you may need to install it. To do it, slide the spindle into place on the top of the doorjamb. Secure it with an Allen wrench. You can skip this process if you don’t have a spindle.

Step 7: Install the interior assembly

Install the internal assembly onto the mounting hole and secure it with provided screws.

Step 8: Install the lever

In this step, you may need to install the lever(if applicable). 

To do it, keep the exterior lever handle face away from your lock, place a key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise. 

Then secure the pre-set screws and remove the key. Install the internal lever and secure it.

Step 9: Install the batteries and perform door handing process

Now, install the batteries and perform the door-handing process. It will guide your Lock the Door’s orientation.

Step 10: Test the latch operation

Once you have completed the installation, test the deadbolt latch by entering the default access code. Try with the code to lock and unlock the door to ensure the latch is correctly engaged.

Step 11: Add user code

In this step, you need to add a 4 to 8 digits user code.

Step 12: Test the lock operation

After adding the user codes, test your lock if it is functioning suitably. To do it, you can enter the user code or use a key to unlock the door.

Depending on the model, you may need to take extra steps, such as pairing the Lock with a Smart module system or taking any additional settings.

Kwikset Double-Cylinder Smart deadbolt lock installation manual

Kwikset 985, 984, 993, 599, 991, 985S, 785, 985L, 665, 909, 158SQT-S, 663, 985-514S, 907 Powerbolt 2.0 are the double-cylinder Smart deadbolt. 

These locks are designed with a keyed cylinder on both sides of the door.  So there are safety issues with using these both-sided keyed deadbolt cylinders.

How do you install the both-sided or Double-cylinder Kwikset Locks?

The installation process of all the double-cylinder locks models is the same. It means you can use this installation procedure for any both-sided Kwikset lock.

Here are some instruments you need to install these locks:

• Phillips head screwdriver
• Piller

Additional tools depending on the applications:

• Hammar
• Wood block
• Tape measure 

Let’s start the installation process:

Step 1: Prepare your door

The first step is to prepare your door. To do it, remove any existing mounting hardware and deadbolt. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew the screws that hold the Lock in place.

Then clean any dirt or debris from the deadbolt holes area to get a perfect place for installation.

Step 2: Check the door measurement

Check if the lock hole, backseat, door thickness, and door edge hole are the right sizes. 

If anything is wrong, you may need drilling to adjust your door measurement. 

If you are drilling a new door, You can find the proper measurement from the manufactures provided template and drilling instructions.

Step 3: Extend the latch bolt

If you need to extend or adjust your latch bolt, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws. 

Step 4: Adjust the backset of the latch(if needed)

Now, if required, you may need to adjust the backset of the latch. Actually, the latch types and sizes vary depending on each model. So, some of these need adjustment. 

Check if the adjustment is required with the below steps:

1. Hold the latch bolt in front of the door hole and keep the latch face flush against the edge of the door.

2. If you notice the D-shaped hole stays in the center of the door hole, no adjustment is needed. So, you can run to the next step 5.

3. If it is not centered, adjustment is required. In that case, go to the below step.

4. To adjust and extend the latch, rotate the front part of the latch 180 degrees clockwise until you get a proper adjustment.

Step 5: Instal the latch bolt

Once the adjustment of the latch backset is completed, install it into its hole. Then secure it with provided screws. Follow the steps from the below image to get a better understanding.

Step 6: Install the deadbolt 

Cylinder deadbolt that contains holes could be an interior cylinder, and another with no holes could be the exterior cylinder. 

Install exterior deadbolt cylinder

First, you need to install the exterior cylinder. To do it, hold it on the outside of the door. Rotate the torque blade or extended tailpiece to align with the D-shaped hole. 

Now feed the tailpiece through the bolt’s D-shaped hole. Then push on the exterior cylinder against your door surface and insert a key during this time. Turn the key to check if the throw latch bolt is extended and works suitably.

If not, take out the deadbolt cylinder. Now turn the tailpiece 180 degrees clockwise and repeat the method again until the bolt doesn’t fully extend.

Install interior deadbolt cylinder

• Install the interior deadbolt cylinder into the inside door hole and feed the end of the tailpiece into the hole. 

• Hold both deadbolt cylinder sides onto the internal and external door spaces.

•  Align the face plate and rotate it clockwise until it is secure in place.

• Install the cover plate and secure it with provided screws.

• Now insert a Key and turn it to retest both sides of your lock. Then check if the throw bolt operates smoothly and extends on both sides.

Step 7: Install the strike plate

Align the strike plate with the door hole. Then use a hammer to tap the strike in place.

Kwikset Smartkey Deadbolt installation manual

The key feature of having the Smart Key re-keying technology makes the locks more applicable and convenient for the users. Yet, all the Kwikset locks don’t support this technology. 

Kwikset 991, 980, 985, 993,907, 660, 917, 599-s, 740, Kwikset Powerbolt 2 programming or installation, 888, 916, 910, Aura, Halo.

How to install a Kwisket SmartKey Deadbolt?

The installation process of this deadbolt may carry the below steps. Yet it might vary for some steps depending on the specific features and specific model.

These are the primary installation method: 

First, check if your used Kwikset lock is compatible with the door measurement.

2. If you already have a deadbolt in your door, remove the existing deadbolt or lock.

3. Check to confirm the lock hole, backseat, door thickness, and door edge hole are the correct sizes. You can find the proper measurement in our installation guide.

4. Install the latch and strike plate included with the Kwikset smart lock and secure it.

5. Extend the latch backset if needed.
